Swatz, Willaston, SA, to DEA explaining that they thought her husband had been naturalised but can now find no record ‘to that effect’, 18 April 1916. name given to police by DEA on 27 April 1916 wanting to know if she is ‘a fit and proper person to be naturalized’ and ‘the applicant’s associations with other Germans’. J E Gleed, Cawler Police Station Report, 8 May 1916: lives with daughter. is 72. born at Bergen. arrived in 1858 on the Victoria. husband died 12 months before. ‘Applicant has no means, but is maintained by her son Hermann Modra, farmer, of near Roseworthy. Applicant does not make it a practice of associating with other Germans except her own family. I consider the applicant a fit person’. husband was Martin Modra.
