Hunt to Graue, 16 June 1916: queried whether husband naturalised. Solicitors replied on 5 July 1916 with details of husband's naturalisation: cert. no. 12869. name Auton Louie Maxmilian Graue, Saxony, Germany, aged 54 at naturalisation on 11 December 1911.
Informed on 12 July 1016 by Hunt that already naturalised.
solicitor response, 24 July 1916: 'we think it would be advisable for a formal grant of naturalisation to be made... questions might be raised as to her marriage status... We do not think that any harm would be done by granting her naturalisation under the circumstances, as she is now a widow.'
Hunt, 29 July 1916: She can't apply because already British.
J. W. & Leslie Hudson, Barristers & Solicitors, 18 April 1917: 'the application wrongly stated that she was the widow... she was advised (wrongly) by a solicitor to say she was a widow'. Mr Graue had 1st wife in Germany. Lived together for 25 years, from 12 months after arrival in Australia. 'even her own children who are grown up assumed that she was married to the deceased, and still do not know to the contrary.' 'proper name of Marie Veit'. Hunt, ? April 1917: no. enemy alien.
She writes in own hand, 16 Aug 1925 - can she apply now. Quinlan, 31 Aug: Y.
Graue, March 1926: Declaration. Could not read, write or speak English so 'I took his word for everything' but already married. Can she be naturalised without advertising, or advertise under her 'married' name? 'he put me on the Roll but I never voted. I would like on account of my children and the public not to be compelled to advertise.' Quinlan response, 12 April 1926: advertise under Graue.
1926 application: occupation and residence the same.
